City Governance
The City of Iuka is governed by a Mayor and a Board of Aldermen who are elected by the citizens of Iuka to represent their interests and guide the policy and direction of the city. Together, they form the legislative and executive branch of city government, working collaboratively to ensure Iuka remains a safe, prosperous, and welcoming community.
The Mayor serves as the chief executive officer of the city, overseeing the day-to-day operations of city government and working closely with department heads to ensure effective delivery of city services. The Mayor also serves as the official spokesperson for the city and represents Iuka in dealings with other government bodies, civic organizations, and the public.
Board of Aldermen
The Board of Aldermen is the governing body of the City of Iuka. Aldermen are elected from wards within the city and serve as the primary legislative authority. The Board meets regularly to conduct city business, adopt the annual budget, establish city policy, and approve ordinances and resolutions necessary for the efficient operation of city government.
Board meetings are open to the public and provide residents with the opportunity to observe city government in action and participate in the democratic process. Meeting agendas and minutes are available at City Hall.
How City Government Works
Iuka operates under the mayor-council form of municipal government as authorized by Mississippi state law. This structure divides responsibilities between the elected Mayor and the elected Board of Aldermen:
| Mayor's Role | Chief executive; oversees city operations; appoints department heads; represents the city officially |
| Board's Role | Legislative authority; adopts budget; enacts ordinances; approves major contracts and expenditures |
| City Clerk | Official record-keeper for the city; maintains meeting minutes, ordinances, and resolutions |
| Board Meetings | Held regularly at City Hall, 118 S. Front St. — open to the public |
